MANSFIELD — Chess Bus, a central Ohio 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is thrilled to announce two major November initiatives supporting the growth of community chess — a free Chess Day at the Mall and the high-level competitive debut of instructor Kelly Boor.
On Saturday, Nov. 22, Chess Bus will host Chess Day at the Mall inside the Richland Mall Lounge. The event will include free lessons, open play, family activities, and friendly challenges — all designed to make chess fun and accessible.
The organization is actively seeking sponsors for prizes, participation gifts, and youth awards to help make the event even more impactful for local families.
Just one week earlier, on Nov. 15 and 16, Kelly Boor will compete in the Major Division (1900+) at the Kings Island Chess Tournament — the largest chess event in Ohio.
This marks her first over-the-board tournament and a major step in her professional development as a chess coach and certified US Chess tournament director.
“Kelly has achieved a level of competitive excellence that most players spend decades chasing,” said Carl Boor, Executive Director of Chess Bus. “After recovering from a traumatic brain injury and discovering chess just over a year ago, she rapidly climbed to the #1 provisional ranking among U.S. women in online quick chess.
“She is currently on track to become one of the oldest women to earn a master-level title, which would be a world-record achievement — but her focus has always been on teaching and community impact.”
Chess Bus programming targets populations that often lack access to enriching activities:
• Children from low-income households
• Seniors facing loneliness and cognitive decline
• People in recovery
• Individuals with disabilities — including the Boors’ two children
“Every person deserves the chance to learn, think, and grow through chess,” said Kelly Boor. “I want every child and adult we teach to feel the joy and confidence that this game brings.”
