MANSFIELD — Generosity comes in many forms — money, time, skills, or even small everyday gestures. However it shows up, generosity has the power to strengthen communities and leave lasting legacies.
That’s the focus of the latest episode of Better Together. Hosts Brittany Schock and Maddie Penwell welcome Carrie Kemerer, executive director of The Shelby Foundation, to talk about how generosity shapes lives and connects us to one another.
Kemerer has led The Shelby Foundation since 2014, a period in which the foundation nearly tripled in size and awarded more than $2.5 million in grants to local nonprofits and more than $1 million in scholarships to Shelby High School graduates.
For Kemerer, generosity has always been part of her story. She explained that philanthropy is not just about money.
“When we think about generosity and philanthropy and giving back, it’s not necessarily about the dimes and the dollars. It’s about generosity and making people feel good,” she said.
“And when you make people feel good, you make yourself feel good.”
Looking to the future, Kemerer said legacy is about more than just buildings or financial gifts.
“Someone who gives of their time, someone who gives of their talent, someone who gives of their treasure is probably one of the most complimentary things you could be known for,” she said.
“Someone who thought of others more than they thought of themselves.”
