SHELBY — Shelby FFA members recently participated in the Agricultural Soils and Urban Soils Career Development Events (CDE) at both the Richland County and District 2 levels.
These contests challenge students to apply their knowledge of soil science, conservation and land management in real-world scenarios.
During the competitions, students evaluated soil pits and examined characteristics such as texture, slope, drainage, erosion and land capability. They then made recommendations for proper land use, conservation practices and urban planning based on their findings.
The Agricultural Soils contest focuses on land used for farming and crop production, while the Urban Soils contest emphasizes soil considerations for construction, landscaping and other non-agricultural uses.

At the county level, Shelby FFA’s rural team placed 2nd with team members Kayne Cooke, Sam Fairchild, Kyleigh Biglin and Conner Gayheart working together. Urban individuals from Pioneer Career and Technology Center were Violet Auck, who won the county contest, and Ella Gates.
At the district level, students competed at the Holmes County Home in Holmesville.
The rural team placed 5th, earning a spot at the State Soils CDE in October. Highlights of the district contest include; Sam Fairchild placing 1st individual in the rural contest and Violet Auck placing 1st individual in the urban contest.
We wish this team the best of luck as they prepare for the state competition.
The Soils CDE helps students develop critical thinking skills and an appreciation for natural resources, while also preparing them for potential future careers in agriculture, conservation and environmental science.
Shelby FFA is proud of its members for their hard work and dedication in representing the chapter at both levels of competition.
