When college student Cassandra Kurek thinks back to her very first audition at the Renaissance Theatre, one word comes to mind: terrified.
As a shy young girl, walking onto a stage in front of strangers felt overwhelming. But something happened at that audition. Through encouragement, creativity and the safe space provided by the Ren’s education programming, Cassandra began to discover her voice.
That spark would grow into a lifelong passion. From performing in Mansfield Youth Theatre productions to finding confidence in front of audiences, Cassandra blossomed. In fact, the young woman who once hesitated to speak up went on to hold the title of Miss Teen Ohio.
Now in college, Cassandra hasn’t forgotten what the Ren gave her. She returns to help lead Broadway Camps and Teddy Bear Concerts, mentoring young performers who might feel just as nervous as she once did.
“The Renaissance inspired me to believe in myself,” Cassandra says. “I want to help other kids experience that same transformation.”
Her story is powerful—but it’s not unique.
The case for the arts
National research backs up Cassandra’s journey. The Arts Education Partnership has found that students involved in the arts are not only more likely to graduate high school, but they also demonstrate stronger skills in leadership, problem-solving and public speaking. Theatre participation in particular cultivates empathy, collaboration and resilience — skills young people carry with them for life.
For Cassandra, those skills translated into confidence on stage, success in competitions and the ability to step into leadership roles. For others, the transformation might mean raising their hand in class, interviewing for a job or simply believing their voice matters.
Building a vibrant community
The Renaissance’s Inspire. Connect. Thrive. Annual Campaign shines a light on these stories — not just to celebrate individual successes, but to remind the community that the arts are essential infrastructure for a healthy, thriving city.
Every time a child like Cassandra steps onto the stage, they’re not just learning to act or sing. They’re learning to face challenges, express themselves and connect with others. Those lessons ripple outward into schools, families, workplaces and neighborhoods.
A call to inspire
By supporting education programs at the Renaissance, donors help light that same spark for thousands of children across Richland County.
Inspiration is the first step in building a vibrant community — and it starts with giving children the chance to dream big.
