National Chess Day Comes to Mansfield – Celebrate at Sterkel Park
Saturday, October 11, 2025 | Sterkel Park, Mansfield, Ohio
MANSFIELD, OH – On Saturday, October 11, the Mansfield community will join players across the country in celebrating National Chess Day with a full day of chess activities at Sterkel Park, 790 Hollywood Ln, Mansfield, OH 44907. The event is hosted by Chess Bus, a new local nonprofit dedicated to promoting chess education and community engagement.
Events Schedule

9:00 AM – USCF Rated Blitz Round Robin (5 minutes per player)
Entry Fee: $20. 100% of entry fees returned as prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.
Note: USCF membership required. -
12:00 PM–3:00 PM – Arena-Style Unrated Tournament
Entry Fee: $10. Prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd based on accumulated points.
A special “Bounty Prize” will be awarded to anyone who defeats FM Carl Boor during the event. Designed for accessibility, this is a great way for new players to experience their first tournament. -
All Day – Open Play, Games, and Free Lessons
Enjoy casual chess, community play, and instruction from Chess Bus coaches.
Registration: On-site at 8:30 AM for Blitz and 11:30 AM for the Arena.
Prizes: Cash and merchandise.

National Chess Day was first proclaimed by President Gerald Ford in 1976 to honor the cultural and educational value of chess in America. Each year, communities across the country celebrate with tournaments, lessons, and open play, bringing together players of all ages and skill levels.
