SHELBY — Two Shelby senior athletes were recently recognized for high school athletic careers that won’t soon be forgotten.

Eve Schwemley and Karsen Homan were named Outstanding Senior Athletes on Friday during Shelby High School’s Recognition Assembly. The two seniors were also Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference Scholar Athletes and received their Scarlet “S” Award.

Both multi-sport athletes, Schwemley and Homan have each accumulated a number of recognitions over the past four years and have played key roles in the success of their teams.

Schwemley is set to continue her education and basketball career next year at Ohio Dominican University. Homan has signed with Ashland University to further his education and football career this coming fall.

The pair will officially become Shelby High School graduates on May 25 at 3 p.m.

Schwemley’s historic senior season

After helping the Shelby volleyball program reach the Division IV state semifinals, Schwemley stepped straight into a historic senior basketball season.

The North Central Ohio Girls Basketball Player of the Year, she averaged an area-best 21.4 points a game en route to leading the Whippets to a 22-win season. Shelby fell 43-39 to Bellevue in a Division IV district final.

Schwemley became just the seventh player in school history to top the 1,000-point plateau. She led the MOAC in both free-throw shooting percentage and 3-point field goal shooting.

Leading the Whippets to their seventh straight MOAC title, Schwemley was selected the MOAC Player of the Year, was the Division IV Player of the Year in District 6 and the Northwest District.

She was also selected to the All-Ohio Division IV first team. Her high school career concluded with a 20-point performance in the Telegraph-Forum Girls Basketball Showcase.

Homan battles adversity

A three-sport athlete, Homan experienced a nasty shoulder injury during Week 8 of the high school football season.

After just three quarters of football missed, Homan suited up for the remainder of the Whippets’ season — which ended in a Division IV, Region 14 semifinal loss to Ontario.

He was named to the All-North Central Ohio defensive unit in December. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound senior ranked among MOAC leaders with eight sacks. Homan finished the season with 67 tackles and 20 tackles for loss, earning a spot on the All-Ohio first team in Division IV.

Homan was also selected the Division IV Lineman of the Year when the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association unveiled its All-Northwest District honors. He shared the award with Sandusky Perkins’ Haiden Bollini.

Without missing a beat, Homan suited up for the Whippets’ basketball season and helped the team reach 16 wins and a trip back to the Division IV district finals.

He earned honorable-mention honors in the Northwest District and District 6.

Homan has not played baseball this season due to his lingering injury. But the senior caught the first pitch of the game on Thursday in a 12-9 victory over Marion Pleasant.
