SHELBY — The Shelby City Health Department is ready to help residents get started on their spring cleaning.

Shelby residents are invited to participate in the department’s annual community cleanup campaign, which is scheduled for Friday, May 16, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, May 17, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

According to the department, there will be no curbside pick-up service this year. Residents are being asked to bring all items to the city’s electric department parking lot at 73 W. State St.

The event is intended for Shelby residents only. Those dropping off items will be asked to provide verification of their city address.

“We are encouraging all residents to use this opportunity to take part in our annual community cleanup,” the department said in its release. “By cleaning your yard, you help control pests, like rodents and mosquitoes which spread disease.”

Shelby City Health Department reserves the right to refuse any material “deemed unfit for this collection,” which may include extremely large amounts or multiple truck loads of solid wastes originating from the same residence.

Elderly and/or disabled persons who wish to request assistance may call (419)-342-5226.

What items can be dropped off?

A variety of items from the exterior of Shelby properties will be accepted in May at the city’s electric department lot.

City residents can drop off stoves, refrigerators, window air conditioner units, washers and dryers. Furniture from around the exterior of residents’ properties will be accepted, excluding mattresses.

Passenger vehicle tires — taken off of rims — will also be collected.

Fallen limbs and branches less than two inches in diameter are eligible, but fresh-cut limbs will not be accepted.

Prohibited items

Several items are not eligible for the cleanup days and will not be accepted by volunteers.

Prohibited items include pesticides, herbicides and cleaners. Electronics, including TVs and computers, are also ineligible for disposal.

Below is a list of the remaining items which will not be accepted:

— hazardous waste materials (paints, stains, varnishes, oils, fluids and batteries)

— commercial/business, tractor, race or semi tires

An exception will be made for dried latex paint, which will be accepted. Residents are to leave the lid off the paint can to speed up the drying process.
