St. Peter’s School is celebrating a milestone moment in its storied basketball history. What began on November 29, 1958, with a 59-31 victory over Delaware St. Mary in the inaugural varsity basketball game in the Spartan Gymnasium, has now culminated in the program’s 1,000th win.
The historic achievement came in thrilling fashion, as the Spartans secured an overtime victory against Mid-Buckeye Conference rival Lucas in the sectional semi-finals—marking the team’s first playoff win since February 26, 2019.
Varsity Coach Roy Shoulders, a proud member of the Class of 1983, reflected on the significance of this milestone. “These players truly embrace what it means to be part of the St. Peter’s basketball family, understanding that when they step on the floor, they honor those who came before them that wore that uniform.”
For Shoulders, this connection to the past extends beyond the players, as he continues to draw inspiration from his own experiences with former Spartan coaches Frye, Barbo, and Maurer.
This historic win is not just about the present team, but also about the intentional effort to rebuild the school’s basketball program from the ground up—an effort that has been championed by alumni of the program such as Shoulders ‘83, Assistant Varsity Coach Jared Harmony ‘01, JH Coach Gavin Foltz ’21, and Youth Coaches Joe Mulherin ’99, Patrick Williams ’99, and Casey Ball ‘08. Thanks to their leadership and dedication, the Spartans are seeing success at every level of competition.
The foundation for the program’s resurgence was laid at the youth level, where alumni coaches have been instrumental in shaping the next generation of Spartan athletes. Mulherin, Williams, and Ball along with Coach Harris guided their two youth basketball teams to championship victories in the YMCA league. Players span the grades of 1st through 5th.
Mulherin, who both played and later coached in the high school program shared, “Growing up it was a privilege to watch and play basketball for St. Peter’s. It is such a great sport to learn life values such as leadership, teamwork, and perseverance. St. Peter’s basketball played an instrumental role in my life, and I feel very fortunate to be able to help bring that opportunity to current Spartans.”
Alums of the youth program joined the middle school this year and continued to represent their training well. Under the coaching of Foltz, St. Peter’s 7th-grade boys’ team captured the Mid-Buckeye Conference Championship.
As the Spartans celebrate this historic milestone—one only 47 other high school programs in Ohio have achieved–they do so with an eye toward the future, one that is bright thanks to the dedication of the players, coaches, and alumni who continue to uphold the proud tradition of St. Peter’s basketball.
According to Athletic Director E.J. Windom, his top priority when assuming the position was to restore the Spartan spirit within our community. During his time as a coach and spectator he “learned that being a Spartan is more than just a mascot or a name; it’s a symbol of resilience, pride, and unity. Being a Spartan requires determination when we face challenges, drawing strength from one another when times are tough, and the celebrating every victory, big or small.
It is more than just playing a game; it’s about creating an environment where athletes grow as individuals, leaders, and teammates. We will continue to reignite the passion for competition, the commitment to excellence, and the support for one another that has always been at the core of who we are.”
Congratulations to the entire Spartan basketball family on reaching 1,000 wins. The next thousand begins on Friday as St. Peter’s takes on the first seeded St. Paul Flyers at 7:30 pm in the sectional final at Norwalk St. Paul High School.
