Late 2020 brought an influx of unhoused individuals into our community for a variety of reasons.
During that time, we were not prepared to serve the massive needs that came with such a wave of calamity.
Mansfield’s only homeless shelter, Wayfinders Ohio (formerly known as Harmony House) was at full capacity, and reports of unhoused individuals squatting in vacant houses and commercial buildings were at an all-time high.
Through our interactions, it was very clear that many of the individuals were unhoused due to unmet behavioral needs, financial hardships, aging out of the foster system, and choosing to live that lifestyle.
Fortunately, many organizations and leaders quickly collaborated to create solutions which resulted in the Homeless Response Team; an outreach team that dovetails Social Workers with the Mansfield Police Department.
This unique and highly effective partnership identifies those who are unhoused and work together to offer an immediate action plan of assistance.
Fast forward to 2025. Our community continues to experience high numbers of homelessness.
Richland County has a wealth of resources to assist those who seek help with utility bills, first month’s rent deposits, food pantries, and clothes closets.
It was often speculated that Mansfield “attracted” the unhoused because of the plethora of programs that offer immediate assistance for emergencies and programs that lead individuals on a path of independence & self-sufficiency.
Whatever the case, in the immense network of assistance programs, it can be overwhelming with the options.
Not only does this pose confusion for those who need the services, it also creates confusion amongst Community Health Workers and other organizations who are providing similar, if not exact services.
This is why First Call 2-1-1 is such an asset to Richland County. They are my go-to for everything when contacted by residents who are in dire need.
We are a community of good hearts and good intentions, but when creating outreach programs, it is important to research and recognize which agencies are providing similar programs.
Afterwards, I would encourage you to contact First Call 2-1-1 with your program information so that they can compile it into their impressive resource bank.
Also, if you are a church or own a commercial building, you are an asset that can be utilized to impact youth and seniors.
If you are interested in seeing how those assets can be incorporated into enriching other people’s lives, I would once again encourage you to contact First Call 2-1-1 to schedule a time to discuss your transformative role.
