MANSFIELD — James Owens aims to put a smile on each of his customer’s faces.

The barber and Mansfield Senior High School alumna celebrated the opening of Barber Brothers Barbershop and Salon on Aug. 31 with co-owner John Price, friends and family members.

The celebration included free haircuts, music and food. Owens and Price worked together at Styles N Motion in Mansfield and decided to go into business together.

“John and I started calling each other barber brothers when we were at the other location, so that’s where the name came from,” Owens said.

“We got along and felt like it was time to take off on our own,” Price said. “We’re having fun.

“My goal is to offer great service and a place for our customers to relax — just a nice, positive experience in your day.”

Owens has multiple family members who are barbers. He earned his cosmetology license in 2005 through Mansfield Senior’s cosmetology program.

“I grew up around barbershops — my godmom owns a shop and my uncles have cut hair too, so I’ve been around the industry all my life,” he said. “I believe God led me here.”

Owens said having family members in the barber business has taught him some lessons to implement at his own shop.

“I learned the customer is always right,” he said. “Having excellent customer service and being a good person makes a difference.”

Barber Brothers offers haircuts for people of all ages, but Owens said he likes kids’ cuts the best.

“If I can keep making them smile, then they’ll come back here as teenagers and adults and we can keep them looking good and confident,” he said.

“I also love what we call ‘big chops.’ When someone has a lot of hair or a really long beard, and we get to cut it off and shape it. You turn around, have a nice clean cut or shave, and can go home and everyone says, ‘Wow, you look great.’”

Barber Brothers offers haircuts, shampoo/ conditioner, facials, hot towel shaves, dreadlock retwists and more. The shop also has discounted rates for kids and senior haircuts.

Barber Brothers is located at 514 Park Ave. West in Mansfield. The shop is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Weekdays are by appointment only and walk-ins are accepted on Saturdays.

Customers can follow the shop on Instagram and book appointments for Owens or Price online.
