MANSFIELD: Sofia “Oma” Lamp went home to be with her Lord and Savior on July 29, 2024. She passed away at Wedgwood Estates, her home for the past 3 years. Prior to that, she was a longtime resident of the Apostolic Christian Church Retirement Center, where she made many lifelong friends. Sofia was the youngest daughter of Jacob and Sophia Baumann.

Born on February 23, 1929 in Franzfeld, Yugoslavia, Sofia endured many hardships before immigrating to the United States from Hamburg, Germany in 1952. Her escape from a concentration camp occurred when a soldier there willingly turned his back to allow Sofia and her sister Lena to run.

Upon her arrival to the United States, she worked shortly at the North American Knitting Mill before working as a housekeeper for pediatrician, Dr. Lawrence Thompson, as well as many other homes in Mansfield. She also worked for her brother, Adam, as a heating and air conditioning assistant. Her tireless work ethic and commitment to doing a thorough job carried over into many other areas of her life, including her commitment to her family and her Lord for the remainder of her days on Earth.

Baptized in 1963 at the Apostolic Christian Church in Mansfield, Sofia served the Lord faithfully for over 60 years. She served on many food committees at church and also volunteered in the kitchen of the Retirement Center for many years. Her ever-present smile and kind words made those around her feel loved and appreciated. She was an avid Eastern Camp goer for many years, enjoying her time traveling and fellowshipping with other believers.

Sofia loved her family, often treasuring them above and beyond anything else God had gifted her with. She was famous among them for her oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, and could always be counted on for her Valentine’s Day heart cookies as well. She loved making lists, a trait that some of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren have adopted as well. She always made sure to have toys available to keep the little ones around her happy during their visits. She enjoyed collecting many things, including shells from the beach and newspaper clippings of those she knew. Always content and never speaking an ill word about anyone, Sofia’s kind spirit, selfless attitude, and generous approach to all those around her will be forever missed.

In addition to her parents, Sofia was preceded in death by her 4 older siblings, Jakob, Adam, Elizabeth, and Magdalena, as well as her best friend, Katie Mueller. She is survived by her three boys, Phil (Hilda), Robert (Mary), and George, and her nephew, Jake Baumann; grandchildren Matt (Julie), Michael (Jennifer), Justin (Nicole), Robby (Candy), and Amber (Brian); great-grandchildren Jada, Zoe, Skylee, Aubrey, Jaxx, Kennedy, Maddox, Axl, Julian, Keegan, Brixton, Aiden, Ian, and Tristan.

The Lamp family will receive visitors from 12:30-2:00 pm on Monday, August 5, 2024 at the Snyder Funeral Home on Lexington Ave where funeral services will begin at 2:00 pm. Minister Andrew Mueller of the Apostolic Christian Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery.

In lieu of Flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Apostolic Christian Retirement Center.
