Grace I. (Carey) Hoskins , age 97, resident of Shelby, Ohio, passed away peacefully, Saturday, July 6, 2024 at Galion Pointe Nursing Facility, surrounded by family.
Grace was born on May 14, l927 in Morehead, Kentucky, to the proud parents of Virgil and Mirtie (Brown) Carey. Like many others from the Moorehead area, during this time, Grace and her family moved to Ohio following the availability of industrial jobs. Grace moved to Shelby in 1939, at twelve years old, where she would remain a proud resident for most of her life. Grace attended Shelby City Schools as a child and grew up with fond memories of a bygone Shelby town rich with industry and history, such as the Shelby Gum Factory, The Shelby Cycle Company, The Shelby Steel Tube Company, and the Shelby Electric Company, just to name a few. As an adult, Grace began working at The Shelby Gum Factory before moving on to working at the famous Shelby Cycle Company, until the company was bought out by AMF Inc, where she remained working until her retirement.
Grace grew up in a Southern Baptist family, where religion was a mainstay in the family. As a local resident, Grace found comfort in being a member of the Grace Valley Baptist Church of Shelby. She attended services regularly with her husband Elmer, until his passing in 1999. Family was the most important aspect of Grace’s life. Although Grace and Elmer experienced much personal tragedy and loss with losing two children during childbirth, they were blessed with their miracle baby, Michael Hoskins. As a result, she absolutely cherished Michael. Then, when Grace became a grandma, her heart was full again and her life truly fulfilled.
Grace was your typical southern grandma that welcomed everyone with open arms and knew how to make you feel at home. She would be best described by those that knew her as being full of life and having a loving personality. Food was Grace’s love language. She enjoyed nothing more than making meals for those that she loved. Grace would make sure to keep your belly full and your heart happy. She knew the way to people’s hearts and thoroughly enjoyed providing that joy to those she loved most. Grace was well-known for her sweet tooth. She favored Little Debbie Snacks, hot fudge sundaes, and trips to Paul’s Drive-In. When not feeding her family, Grace enjoyed spending time in the outdoors. She loved taking walks around her yard, tending to her garden, and flowerbeds. She could spend hours sitting on her porch swing soaking in the weather or talking with her best friends, her two sisters, Nancy and Christine. Grace was a beautiful soul that had a light that shined on all that knew and loved her. Her welcoming nature and loving spirit will be remembered and missed by many.
Survivors include one son, Michael (Diane) Hoskins, of Trego, Wisconsin; two granddaughters, Melanie (George) Mason of Shelby; Liz Hoskins; three great-granddaughters, Brooke M. (Franz) Schrantz; Braelyn and Madison Byerly; one great-grandson, Kyle M. (Faith) Krystofik; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In addition to her parents, Grace was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Elmer Hoskins, whom she married on August 7, l945; and siblings, Estil Carey, Hobart Carey, Ray Carey, Joe Carey, Oval Carey, Ann Burkett, Doris Ernsberger, Leroy Carey, Nancy Armstrong, and Christine Arter.
