The YMCA of North Central Ohio-Mansfield dance students are tapping their way to the upcoming recital on May 31 at 6:00 p.m.

Themed “Alice’s Wonderland,” this year’s performance at The Renaissance Theatre promises to enchant audiences with a blend of classical ballet, jazz, contemporary dance, jazz and acrobatics.

With three instructors and a couple of volunteers, the program offers a plethora of classes in different genres including creative movement, tap, hip hop, Chance to Dance (dance classes for the special needs community) and more. All sessions attract individuals from the ages of three to 92, giving those the opportunity to experience the world of dance without too much of a time or financial undertaking.

“I wanted a program where kids could come and have a more affordable way of accessing dance,” volunteer Heidi Augustine said. “Our short sessions allow beginners to try it out without committing to a lengthy program.”

There is also a scholarship program for students and their families to apply for additional aid, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to pursue their passion for dance.

The Mansfield YMCA dance program would like to thank the sponsors for this year’s performance; JLS Energy Brokerage and Mansfield Gemini Social Poker Club.

With the recital date quickly approaching, there is still time to secure tickets for the performance. The YMCA is currently distributing first come first serve free tickets to community members purchased by an anonymous donor. To see if they are still available call 419-522-3511.

“This is an opportunity for members of the community to see a dance production and sit in the seats at The Renaissance which is just a cool experience in itself,” Director Amada Chesebro said.

Shelby YMCA Dance Recital

The YMCA of North Central Ohio-Shelby recently had their annual recital, showcasing the talents of many young performers ranging in age from three to 18.

As a cornerstone of the Shelby YMCA for over a decade, the dance program is currently taught by four instructors; Monica Lee, Allie Grau, Kaycee Hess and Bailey Walter, and has around 85 students with more enrolling each year, some in multiple genres.

This year’s recital took place on April 19, 20 and 21 at Shelby Senior High School, captivating the audience with a two hour show stopping performance.

A number that has become tradition for the Shelby program is the senior dance, where the girls look forward to the opportunity to dance together as seniors and with a chosen partner as one of their final farewells. This is one of many rituals students, families and instructors have enjoyed for a long time, seen as a testament to growing up.

“I think my favorite part of being an instructor is seeing the little kids get better and better and finding a love for dance,” Director of dance Jill Potter said with tears in her eyes. I’ve been doing this so long, it’s not just a job, it’s a big part of my life.”
