MADISON TOWNSHIP — Madison Township trustees approved a list of 20 stretches of road for paving for a bid package on Wednesday.

The road portions add up to about 3.8 total miles.

The road contract has three separate sections — one for the majority of the roads listed, the second for Bentwood Court and the third for Home Road.

Trustee Tom Craft said part of Home Road will need striped, so the township will have to account for asphalt and paint. Springfield Township shares part of Home Road, so Madison trustees will invoice Springfield for their share of the costs. The area to be paved and striped on Home Road runs from Marion Avenue to Deer Park.

Bentwood Court includes 1.5 inches of asphalt for part of the road and 2.5 inches at the cul-de-sac. All other roads in the contract will receive 1.5 inches of asphalt.

The other sections of roads on the paving list include:

  • Burger Avenue from Longview Avenue north to the dead end
  • Walker Road from Burger Avenue west to Belmont Avenue
  • Benedict Avenue from Longview Avenue to the dead end
  • Averill Avenue from Longview Avenue to the dead end
  • Averill Avenue from State Route 39 north to Hanna Road
  • Averill Avenue from Hanna Road north to Hahn Road
  • Benedict Avenue from State Route 39 north to Hanna Road
  • Benedict Avenue from Hanna Road north to Hahn Road
  • Herring Avenue from State Route 39 north to Hanna Road
  • Herring Avenue from Hanna Road north to Hahn Road
  • Woodside Drive from State Route 39 north to Trimble Road
  • Truxall Drive from State Route 39 north to Fir Drive
  • Truxall Drive from Fir Drive north to Woodside Drive
  • Fir Drive from Woodside Drive east to Truxall Drive
  • Fir Drive from Truxall Drive east to Trimble Road
  • Springlake Drive from State Route 42 north to Lakefront Drive
  • Lakefront Drive from Katherine Drive to the dead end
  • Molly Court from Piper Road south to dead end

Trustee Dan Fletcher said the township will advertise the contract for two weeks and plan to open the bids by the end of May. Paving should be completed by September 1.

The number of roads and specific streets could change based on bid packages.

Trustees expect total paving costs to be less than $370,000, including the portion of Home Road that the township will invoice Springfield Township for.

Residents ask about Brace Avenue road plans

Also at Wednesday’s special meeting, Brace Avenue resident James Carroll and 5th Avenue resident Jerry Whitehead asked trustees if they planned any work for Brace Avenue.

The township’s road department is stationed at Brace Avenue, and Carroll said the heavy trucks can cause or irritate potholes.

“The township garage was built 30-plus years ago and I can’t remember the last time the street was paved,” Carroll said. “I’ve got gravel in my yard from the sweepers on the dump trucks.

“I’m not complaining about the township trucks, I just think the road’s in bad shape. If it were paved, there wouldn’t be as much dust.”

Trustees said they will look into an estimate for work costs on Brace Avenue and continue to discuss the road at later meetings.

“To do that and to do that right, it could cost $30,000,” Fletcher said. “I don’t want to put an inch and a half of asphalt there when it’s not going to solve the problem.

“If our estimates here are high, there’s nothing that says we can’t take the leftovers and do something with Brace. We won’t know until we bid this out.”

Fletcher said he hoped to collect road contract bids by the end of May and select a paving company by the trustees’ June 3 meeting.
