MADISON TOWNSHIP — Madison Township trustees expect to have more than $300,000 to spend on resurfacing roads this year.
Trustees discussed a list of 20 stretches of 12 different roads on their paving agenda at Monday’s meeting. Trustee Dan Fletcher put together a proposed contract of stretches of road to discuss on Monday.
“There’s a lot of carryover from last year, we have about $350,000 to pave with,” he said. “Our estimate is below that.”
The roads on the list are subject to change but currently include a number of streets on the west side of the township near Trimble Road. On the township’s east side, Molly Court, Lakefront Drive and Springlake Drive are also in the proposed paving list.

The roads currently on the paving list are marked in the photos above.
Tom Craft said Bentwood Court and Home Road will have to be bid out separately from the other roads on the paving list.
“I’ll be honest with you, Bentwood was on last year’s paving list, and between the three trustees — me, Jimmy and Cathy — somehow it got left off the bid package,” he said. “And so did Home Road from Marion Avenue to Deer Park.
“The engineer’s office has a spec on Brentwood and they’re recommending about an inch and a half of asphalt in one place and two and a half inches in the cul-de-sac.”
Trustees plan to advertise and open a bid package within the upcoming weeks. They will meet at 5 p.m. Wednesday to approve the road paving contract.
Fletcher said he also has a list of roads in mind for chip-and-seal resurfacing. He expects to spend about $65,000 on chip-sealing.
Township looking for full-time, seasonal road department help
Trustees approved advertisements seeking help for seasonal work with the road department between the dates of June 1 and Sept. 1.
Craft said trustees hope to hire two people for full-time positions starting at $18 an hour.
“They’ll need a valid Ohio driver’s license, CDL optional, and pay is negotiable with experience,” he said. “We’d welcome resumes to clerk@madisontwp.us.”
The road department helps keep the township’s roads safe with brush clearing, patching potholes, clearing storm drains and other various tasks.
Trustees also approved a motion from Fletcher to gather proposals for a Manner Drive drainage pipe, which they approved $150,000 worth of ARPA funds for at their March 18 meeting.
Fletcher said he hopes the funds can cover design and construction costs of an upgraded drainage pipe at the intersection of Manner and Eastview drives intersection. He said the area has been prone to flooding whenever the township gets heavy rainfall.
“We’ve already appropriated money for this construction work,” Fletcher said. “I’m going to request proposals for topographical surveys, property surveys, hydrologic data and details on temporary support of sanitary sewers during construction.”
Fletcher said he will ask a few engineering firms to estimate what items the project will require and the cost of the work.
Also in Monday’s meeting:
- Fletcher said trustees are looking into closing Belmont Avenue for a culvert repair or securing steel plates during construction. He estimated a small portion of the road would be closed most of the summer if the township can not secure steel plates. Trustees approved a motion to request proposals on the design and work for the project on Monday.
- Fire Chief Ken Justus said he picked up a used 2018 ambulance from New Jersey. Medic 73 is being lettered before a maintenance inspection.
- Justus said the Richland County Emergency Management Agency and VASU Communications determined that the tornado sirens on top of the township water tower were not functioning properly due to faulty batteries. He said he is having replacement batteries and chargers ordered.
