SHELBY — The Shelby Fire Department responded to a working structure fire early Thursday morning which destroyed an East Whitney Avenue home.

According to Shelby fire Chief Mike Thompson, firefighters were dispatched at 2:26 a.m. by the Shelby Police Department to 84½ East Whitney Ave. for a working structure fire.

“The first arriving crew found the occupant out of the home and flames showing through the roof,” Thompson said. “Shiloh Fire was dispatched as automatic mutual aid.”

He added no injuries were reported to the occupant or responders.

“The residence was located in a long alleyway making securing a water source a challenge for responders,” Thompson explained.

As firefighters arrived on scene, the fire had advanced to the point that it was unsafe to perform an interior attack, the chief said.

“The home is a total loss, garage and outbuildings are intact,” Thompson said.

The cause of the fire currently remains undetermined, he added.

The Shiloh Fire Department was dispatched as automatic mutual aid and the American Red Cross responded to assist the occupant, reported the chief.

Crews remained on scene Thursday morning until 5:36 a.m., Thompson said.
