COLUMBUS — They reached the same rung of the state podium, but took vastly different routes to get there.

Ontario 113-pounder Jacob Ohl and 138-pounder Mason Turnbaugh both finished third Sunday morning at Ohio State’s Schottenstein Center, but not all third-place finishes are created equal.

A junior, Turhbaugh couldn’t have navigated a more difficult path.

He dropped his first match of the weekend before winning five straight consolation bracket matches. It culminated with a 6-3 win over Carrollton’s Josh Carman in the third-place match.

“He came all the way back through the consolation bracket,” Ohl said. “You have no idea how difficult that is.”

Ohl’s path was a little more conventional.

The senior reached the championship semifinals Saturday evening before a 5-3 sudden victory loss to projected state champ Blake Bartos of Medina Buckeye.

“It was so hard to get re-focused and go back out there,” Ohl said.

He rebounded with a pair of wins Sunday morning, capping his high school career with a 5-2 victory over Marlington’s Aiden Bean.

Galion’s Alex Griffith matched Ohl and Turnbaugh with a third-place finish at 285. The senior and four-year state qualifier broke Galion’s career wins record in his final high school match, a 5-1 win over Hubbard’s Nick Bowser.

“I had a good weekend. I didn’t end where I wanted to, but I got the next best thing,” said Griffith, who picked up career win No. 162 to break a tie with Deaken McCoy, a state runner-up at heavyweight in 2015.

“I battled back for third. That’s all I could do.”

Galion’s Carter Trukovich took fifth at 113. Trukovich fell to Ontario’s Ohl in the consolation semifinals Sunday morning before dispatching Claymont’s Daniel McGarr 13-3.

A freshman, Trukovich met Ohl in the finals of the Clyde sectional and the Norwalk district. Ohl won all three postseason meetings.

“Competing with him the last three weeks hasn’t been easy but he’s pushed me and made me work harder in the room,” Trukovich said. “Obviously (third place) isn’t what we came for but I’ve got three more shots at this.

“Every match that I get to wrestle in the crowd, I like the pressure and I like the spotlight.”

Ontario’s Landon Campbell also finished fifth. The 215-pound senior pinned Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary’s Andy Vanscoy in his final high school match.

“I’m glad to say I ended on a win, even though I didn’t finish in the top four like I wanted to,” said Campbell, an All-Ohio football player who will punt for Division II Ashland University next fall.

“Fifth isn’t too bad and as a team, we may be able to hang a banner on the wall for state placement. The program is in a good place.”

Clear Fork’s Luke Schlosser capped his high school career with a sixth-place finish at 165. Schlosser dropped a 7-2 decision to Columbus DeSales’ Zack Lopez.

“It’s not how I wanted it to go. I lost some tough matches,” Schlosser said. “But I made the podium and I’m All-Ohio again, so I’m happy with it.”
