MANSFIELD: Katherine B. Roman, age 96, of Mansfield passed away Monday, March 4, 2024 in OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital following an extended illness.

She was born February 8, 1928 in Mt. Vernon to Frank L. and Katherine (Dunlap) Biggs and attended the Ohio State University after her graduation from Pataskala High School. She made the decision to put her education on hold for a job opportunity at American Education Publishing in Columbus, and later relocated to Connecticut to work in the editorial offices of Wesleyan University Press. While working in Connecticut, she met Felix Roman on blind date, and the couple was married November 19, 1955.

Katherine moved back to Ohio with her husband in 1965, making a home in Mansfield. Once their children were in school, Katherine returned to college, earning her Bachelor’s degree in education from Ohio State Mansfield. She later received her Master’s degree from Bowling Green State University. In 1974 she began work as a 3rd grade teacher at Lexington Central Elementary School, where she taught for nearly 30 years before her retirement.

In her spare time, Katherine was a skilled seamstress and enjoyed crochet, knitting, and cross stitch. She dabbled in all kinds of arts and crafts, and could always be found in the middle of a good book. Most of all, she loved time spent with her family, especially her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Katherine is survived by her three children Karen (Geoffrey) Fischer of Mansfield, Donald (Barbara) Roman of Hilliard, and Robert Roman of Mansfield; grandchildren Katherine Fischer of Mansfield, Matthew Fischer of Mansfield, Nikki (Jay) Schlater of Powell, Tyler Roman (Ben Humphries) of Columbus, Lily Lu-Lerner (Louis Brown) of Denver, CO, and Violet Lu of New York, NY; and two great grandchildren Coen and Madeleine Schlater; siblings Mary Lou (Edward) Roberts of Marysville, Robert (Marlene) Biggs of Natchez, LA, Richard (Merri) Biggs of Hilliard, a sister-in-law Amie Biggs of Silver City, NM; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Felix, brother Frank Biggs, Jr., sister Jean Moorhead, and brother-in-law Ernest Moorhead.

A private graveside for immediate family was held in Lexington Cemetery. A memorial service honoring the life of Katherine B. Roman will be held at a later date at Lexington Church of the Cross. The family will receive guests the hour prior to the service.
