SANDUSKY — Lexington’s dream season came to an abrupt end Wednesday night.
But coach Peter Them chose to focus on his team’s myriad accomplishments instead of the 4-1 loss to Bay in the Division II state semifinals at Perkins High School.
“It sucks right now, but we did do a lot of great things,” Them said. “It hurts right now but we’ll talk about it in a couple weeks and everybody will be all good.
“It would have been nice to play one more.”
The Rockets (18-2-3) took a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when Reed Clark got his head on Million Evans’ free kick in the box, sending the ball past a diving Lex keeper Garet Weaver and into the lower left corner of the goal.
“That’s their M.O. They like to put you on your back heel and press you,” Them said. “If you make mistakes, you pay for them.
“Basically we were on our heels for the first 15 minutes.”
Clark gave the Rockets a 2-0 lead when he scored off a perfectly placed crossing pass from Connor Bozak with 1:34 to play in the opening half.
Bay extended the lead to 3-0 with 26:48 remaining in the second period when Evans found Ethan Jacobs down the left flank. The shifty Jacobs made a sensational move before rocketing a shot past Weaver.
Lex (16-2-4) got on the board with 24:52 remaining when Gage Potter got a head on a Terrance Corbin entry pass to make it 3-1.
The Rockets put it away less than four minutes later when Evans’ corner kick was misplayed and Sheldon Coffman was there to clean up the mess to make it 4-1 with 20:04 to play.
“It was 2-0 at halftime and I figured if we could get the first one (of the second half) we might be alright,” Them said. “We didn’t lay down. It just wasn’t our night.
“You get to a state semifinal and you don’t want to lose 4-1.”
Lexington will lose eight seniors to graduation.
“It’s a special group. They’ve been together a long time,” Them said. “I almost feel like an outsider because they’ve been together for so long.
“We’re graduating a great senior class, a bunch of guys who have been through a lot the last three or four years. I’m thankful for those guys and everything they’ve done.”
