MOUNT VERNON – Mount Vernon (5-3, 2-2 OCC) will look to send its 17 seniors off in style when it hosts Mansfield Senior (7-1, 3-1) on Friday night. It will be Senior Night for the Yellow Jackets, but it will also be an opportunity to record a signature win against one of the area’s top teams.

Mount Vernon beat Madison by 26 points last week, snapping a three-game losing streak. Wyatt Gregory, the team’s workhorse running back, ran for 197 yards and four touchdowns. In doing so, he became the first Mount Vernon rusher to gain 1,500 yards in one season since J.D. Orr in 2014.

Mansfield Senior, meanwhile, will be looking for revenge following its first loss of the season last Friday. The Tygers fell by one point on a last-second touchdown pass at Wooster.

Last week’s loss aside, Mansfield Senior has proven to be nearly unstoppable so far this season, scoring 32 points per game while giving up just 8. The Tygers are currently ranked second in Div. III Region 10; Mount Vernon is 17th in Div. II Region 7.

Knox Pages reporter Grant Pepper spoke with Mount Vernon head coach Mike Kerr and senior defensive back Alex Mullins about this week’s matchup.

Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. Friday from Yellow Jacket Stadium.
