GALION — The sectional tournament was unkind to area volleyball teams.
Only two local squads survived the opening round of the tournament to advance to this week’s district.
In Division III, top-seeded Galion had little trouble in disposing of No. 11 Upper Sandusky in the sectional finals. The Tigers cruised to a 25-13, 25-21, 25-17 victory.
Samantha Comer led the attack with 12 kills, while Taylor Keeran had 10 kills. Kayla Hardy had 33 assists.
The Tigers (22-1) will take on fourth-seeded Willard at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Seneca East High School. No. 2 seed Huron will meet No. 8 Edison at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Seneca East. The winners will square off for the district title at 7 p.m. Thursday at Seneca East.
In Division IV, No. 3 seed Buckeye Central rolled to a 25-14, 25-10, 25-13 win over sixth-seeded Sandusky St. Mary in the sectional championship game.
The Bucks are led by Lexi Evak, who has 259 kills and 60 blocks on the season. Mackenzie Phenicie has 349 assists on the year.
Buckeye Central will meet second-seeded Norwalk St. Paul at 7 p.m. Monday at Willard High School. St. Paul advanced with a 3-0 win over South Central in the sectional final.
Top-seeded Monroeville will take on No. 4 seed Seneca East in the early game of Monday’s district doubleheader. The winners of Monday’s district semifinals will meet for a district crown at 6 p.m. Thursday at Willard.
