MANSFIELD — The Mansfield City Schools board of education has an open seat.

On Thursday, according to district spokesman Larry Gibbs, Monica Hubbard resigned from the Mansfield City Schools Board of Education. Hubbard cited personal reasons for stepping down.

Gibbs said she described her experience on the board as “a positive endeavor.”

In a letter to board president Renda Cline on Thursday, Hubbard wrote:

“It has been my pleasure to serve with you on the board of education for the Mansfield City Schools. You have given strong leadership toward the goals of the district. I feel that working with the board has been a positive endeavor.

“That said, I find myself in a position in which I must, for personal reasons, resign from my position. Please consider my resignation effective immediately. Please know that I will continue to work tirelessly to be a positive influence to the Mansfield City Schools but, unfortunately, not in the capacity of board member.

“Thank you for understanding. Please know that you may call on me to assist in any way possible in the future.”

Mrs. Hubbard, a former principal at Prospect Elementary School and at an elementary school in Mount Gilead, is a teacher at Discovery School, Gibbs said. She was elected to a four-year term on the board in November 2013 and had served as vice president after the resignation of Dina Davis last June.

According to Gibbs, the board of education is seeking qualified applicants to serve the final 11 months of Mrs. Hubbard’s term through Dec. 31, 2017. If the appointed member desires to serve longer, he or she must be a candidate in the Nov. 7 election.

Applicants who meet eligibility requirements of the Ohio Revised Code must submit an email letter of interest to Ms. Cline at cline.renda@mansfieldschools.org by noon on Jan. 30.

Applicants must be:

A U.S. citizen

At least 18 years old

A resident of the state for at least 30 days preceding the appointment

A resident of the school district for at least 30 days preceding the appointment

Registered to vote in the school district for at least 30 days preceding the appointment

The board will meet in special session at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 7 to interview qualified applicants in executive session. At the end of the executive session the board will reconvene in public session to announce the appointed member.

Serving with Cline on the board are Chris Elswick, Sheryl Weber and Gary Feagin.
