Bernice Matney, 85, of Ontario, died Tuesday, October 20, 2015 at Signature Health Care of Galion, with her family by her side, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Bernice was born in Jewell Ridge, VA on November 24, 1929 to the late Coy and Mamie (Dye) Brown. She married Rev. Robert L. Matney on March 21, 1946 and he preceded her on August 13, 2008.

Bernice moved to Crestline in 1952 coming from Virginia. She was a member of the Mt. Tabor Freewill Baptist Church in Mt. Gilead and served there in the capacity of a clerk. In 1954 she worked for a year at the former Angelwood Rest Home. Bernice was a two-time cancer survivor. She enjoyed quilting, gardening and spending time with her family. Bernice loved to sing and play gospel music on her guitar.

Bernice is survived by three sons and two daughters; Bobby L. and Linda Matney, Mt. Gilead, Wanda S. and Steve Massey, Ontario, Linda G. Russell, Greensboro, NC, Larry B. and Patty Matney, Galion, Douglas D. Matney, Galion, fifteen grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, her sister; Geraldine Smith, Crestline, her step brother, John and Hazel Bostic, Swords Creek, VA, her Aunt, Arbutus Richardson, Crestline, her sisters-in-law, Loretta Wilson, Kernersville, NC, and Dolas Matney, Kingsport, TN, her brother-in-law, Charles and Wilma Matney, Lakeland, FL, and numerous cousins and nephews.

Friends may call Friday, October 23, 2015 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Mark A. Schneider Funeral Home, 223 West Main St., Crestline. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at the Mark A. Schneider Funeral Home, Crestline, with Brother Richard Layne officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Crestline.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Tabor Freewill Baptist Church in care of the funeral home.
