SHELBY — Lucas Keinath was selected “Student of the Month” for April for the Music Academy of Karate and Empowerment.

“He met the requirements of perseverance, integrity, indomitable spirit, courtesy, and self-control. He has been through some rough patches in his life recently and his indomitable spirit kept him going. We are proud to announce Lucas as the student of the month for April,” said Sensei Reneta Music, chief instructor.

Keinath’s selection was announced when the academy had its monthly promotion on April 3 at the Ohio Bird Sanctuary. There were 25 students in attendance and all achieved a promotion of either attendance or a stripe for kata.

The requirements for belt rank are all standardized and expected to be met by the student. The instructors assess each student and recommend them for promotion based on the meeting of the standard at the ability of the student.

If a student is not prepared to be promoted, which would be from a lack of attendance or not meeting the standard,  they are encouraged to attend the test for attendance and to learn from Grandmaster Gary Music, who attends all the promotions.

M.A.K.E. enforces discipline and respect from the students, guiding them to be a successful adult. Students are expected to stand and or sit quietly and pay attention during teaching time at a test or during a class.

“It’s what I don’t teach you that’s most important,” Reneta Music said.
