In a world where career choices can feel overwhelming, Mansfield Christian School (MCS) is pioneering a unique initiative to guide students towards their vocational callings. The Career Academy Program (MCCAP) at MCS is not just about education; it is about empowering students to explore, discover and discern their professional pathways while grounded in their faith.

The idea emerged four years ago when Superintendent Cy Smith saw the need for this program not only for students, but the community as a whole. Although programs like this exist in the area, none are curated towards those who attend private schools.

“I knew it would be a challenge to coordinate the logistics for the program, but this had the potential to be life-changing for our students and game-changing for local employers,” Dr. Smith said.

Students in the Academy of Health Professions are preparing for their future in the medicine field.

MCCAP currently offers specialized academies focused on Medicine and STEM related fields. While the Academy of Health Professions has completed its inaugural year and the STEM Academy is set to begin this fall, Ministry and Missions will commence in 2025, followed by Business in 2026.

Along with the offering of these unique courses, the program encourages community involvement, inviting professionals to mentor, speak or provide experiential learning opportunities. Collaborations such as these help to bridge the gap between education and employment.

“We have carefully curated a list of community members whose expertise aligns with our academies,” Assistant Superintendent Mandy Wushinske said. “Through mentorship and hands-on experiences, students gain valuable insights into their chosen fields.”

With MCS’ mission at the forefront of every event, program or course offered by the school, MCCAP is no different. Dr. Smith emphasized the fact that it is essential for students to understand the connection between their faith and future professions.
“We’re training them to use their talents to glorify God and serve others,” he said.

One of the program’s primary goals is to help students make informed career decisions. It allows students to explore professions before committing to higher education or vocational training.

MCCAP also instills values students will carry with them throughout their whole working career.

“Regardless of their future occupations, we are teaching students to serve and work for the common good,” Dr. Smith said. “By doing so, we’re nurturing Christian leaders who can influence our culture positively.”

Not only can the program be used to excel a student’s future but also give them the opportunity to see if a career is the right fit for them. While some students who completed year one in the Academy of Health Professions are excited to continue their path in Medicine, there was one student who knew confidently this was not the right pathway for them. These two situations are both forms of success and encompass the goal of the program.

Senior Kaelyn Carr could not be more sure about her future in Medicine because of the MCCAP program.
“I have only grown more confident in my decision to become a nurse,” she said. I find great joy in learning different things in this class and I have enjoyed the shadowing opportunities and talking with my mentor.”

As the program continues to evolve, MCCAP remains committed to enhancing the student experience. Their ultimate goal is to equip students with the skills and confidence to pursue their God-given callings.
