MANSFIELD — The all-volunteer planning team is kicking things up a notch for the 2nd Annual Spherion Mid-Ohio 13er Half-Marathon and 5k Fun Run. This year’s event is taking place on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 3, and will feature more runners, course entertainment and family activities.

Those interested are urged to register before Earlybird pricing ends on Saturday, April 30. Currently, registration is $50 for the Half Marathon and $20 for the 5k. Participants receive a race shirt and a finishers medal. Navigate to www.midohio13er.com for more information.

The event is well on its way to becoming a signature event for the area. Race director Tim Hilterman said, “Word is getting out about this fun, challenging race. Last year, we even had a participant from California. We know this will also draw those training for the Akron or Columbus marathons. It’s perfectly timed as a great training run for those races and we have a perfect course for the purpose.”

The 5k course starts on Park Avenue by Central Park. Runners and walkers travel down Park Avenue West until Kingwood Center, then come back the same way.

Hilterman says, “We’re seeing a large increase with those interested in healthy living. Many families have decided to train for and complete the 5k in order to stay in shape, have fun, and support an important cause at the same time. A number of local companies are creating teams as well.”

The Half Marathon offers a diverse experience as it winds around Mansfield. Runners begin downtown, run through the parks, travel a few miles on the bike trail, and run through several neighborhoods before finishing downtown.

“We’re increasing course support this year to aid the runners and we’re adding live entertainment to several places along the course. This is a challenging and fun race. We received many positive comments from last year and we’re excited to see this grow.” reports Hilterman.

The event seeks to draw support for drug prevention efforts in the area. Last year’s race raised over $25,000 that was placed with the Richland County Foundation for distribution.

Hilterman concludes, “Are you up for the challenge of the 5k or Half Marathon? Grab some friends, sign up today, and start training. Like our Facebook page as we’ll have fun information and training tips and opportunities. You’ll also get to follow the training of our celebrity runner, Marilyn John, starting in June.”
