Strive to thrive blog #5

Editor's Note: This article was submitted by Allen Stoll, Exercise Physiologist at OhioHealth and Strive to Thrive personal trainer.

Have you found yourself saying, “Running is boring. I don’t like going to the gym. Weightlifting is not for me”? If any of those thoughts have crossed your mind when you think of exercise, that’s okay. Exercise not a contest about who can lift the most weight or who can grunt the loudest. Staring at a TV while you run on an infinite belt of rubber isn’t fun for everyone.

Exercise is about becoming physically active, regardless of what the exercise might look like for you. Even if you do like going to the gym, power-grunting, or performing strange poses called things like warrior or downward dog, everyone can benefit from a little change.

Keeping it fresh when it comes to your exercise routine may be what keeps you moving and motivated. Look for some active things you already enjoy doing or would like to try and then them! Listed below are a few ideas:

  • Outdoor Hiking

  • Swimming

  • Group Exercise Class

  • Cycling

  • Hula Hooping

  • Ninja-Training

  • Active games with your kids/grandkids

  • Walking your dog

  • Recreational sports, like Basketball, Racquetball, and Tennis

If you still don’t know what you’d like to do, consider giving pickleball a try! This sport, which combines elements of tennis and ping pong, is the new craze that’s (somewhat) sweeping the nation. Intrigued? If so, the OhioHealth Ontario Health and Fitness Center offers skills and drills classes as well as weekly pick-up games. If you think you’d like to give it a try, contact the OhioHealth Ontario Health and Fitness Center at (419) 526-8900.
