MANSFIELD — Jaekob Conard and Jonah Aumend made sure Madison defended its title at Friday’s Tyger Invitational.
Conard outdueled Aumend for medalist honors in a two-hole playoff and the Rams carded a season-best 325 to easily outdistance runner-up Ontario (339) at the eight-team event at Twin Lakes.
Clear Fork (356) was third, followed by Bucyrus (360), Crestview (374), Marion Harding (376), Mansfield Senior (403) and Mapleton (403).
Conard and Aumend shot matching 78s to force a playoff. They both parred the par 4 10th, before Conard parred the par 5 11th for his first tournament championship.
“I was nervous. I’m not going to lie,” said Conard, a junior. “It’s a really good feeling to hit some good shots and … put up a low number. I was able to put it close to the pin most of the day.
“We won as a team last year, so to win it back-to-back is a really good feeling.”
“It was good to repeat with a lot of the same guys from last year,” said Aumend, a senior. “We knew we had the talent and to do it as a team was definitely enjoyable.
“As for the playoff, I wouldn’t have wanted to face anybody else. It’s so much more fun playing with a teammate.”
Will Laskey shot an 84 for the Rams, while Ian Wolfe carded an 85. Landon Ellis (86) and Kameron Stumbo (99) also competed for Madison, but their scores were discarded.
“That’s the best we’ve shot in a while. We haven’t thrown out an 86 for a long time,” Madison coach Eric Wellman said. “We’ve played pretty well this year, but we’ve run into some teams that have just played better.
“To have two guys shoot 78, especially with the the wind, that’s good shooting. They put it all together today.”
Runner-up Ontario was led by Quentin Skropits, who carded an 83. Ryan Chapman shot an 84 while Colin Milligan and Cade Thompson had 86s.
Jared Scott and Drew Lind led Clear Fork with 87s. Zane Schultz had an 88, while Caleb Dettmer and Peter Cook each shot 94.
Reece Zeigler led Bucyrus with an 81. He was backed by Kael Scott (91), Grady Jackson (92) and Gavin O’Connell (96).
For Crestview, Hayden McMillen (81) and Chase Brooky (82) led the way. Brett Hill had a 102, while Tyler Wheeler and Peyton Garrett each shot 109.
Freshman Jacob Beaschler led Marion Harding with an 81. Alix Goney had a 93, while Will Atkinson carded a 98 and Connor McCoy had a 104.
Tanner Harless led Mansfield Senior with an 87. Nick Sayers had a 91, while Luke Hodapp shot 105. Zander Perrigan and C.J. Hock shot 120s.
Evan Dennison and Luke Miller led Mapleton with matching 94s. Grady Kline had a 104 and Nolan Dennison shot a 111.
