MANSFIELD — The sectional round of the tournament wasn’t especially kind to north central Ohio.

Of the 21 teams in the Richland Source’s coverage area, only four survived the opening week of the postseason.

Shelby (22-2) advanced to this week’s Division II district at Galion after dodging a bullet over the weekend in the the Bucyrus sectional finals. The third-seeded Whippets needed overtime to dispatch upstart Lexington 52-48 and will play second seeded Willard (19-4) in the district semifinals at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Galion. The Crimson Flashes, who knocked off Madison in the sectional finals, handed the Whippets one of their two regular season losses.

In Division III, third-seeded Loudonville had little trouble in disposing of No. 6 Manchester 65-47 in the sectional finals. The road will get considerably more difficult for the Redbirds (19-4) at this week’s Wooster district. Loudonville will take on Orrville (22-1) at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday in a rematch of last year’s district semifinal. The Red Riders won last year’s meeting 65-55.

In Division IV, a pair of Crawford County schools will be in action at the Willard district. Defending district champ Buckeye Central advanced with a comfortable 57-28 win over Mohawk. The top-seeded Bucks (20-3) will play No. 3 Norwalk St. Paul at 8 p.m. Thursday at Willard. In Thursday’s early game at Willard, No. 2 Wynford will take on No. 5 Sandusky St. Mary. The Royals (15-7) advanced with a 52-37 win over Lakeside Danbury.
