SANDUSKY — Galion wasn’t ready to relinquish the crown just yet.
The Tigers won their fifth straight Division II sectional championship on a sun-soaked Thursday afternoon, shooting a 324 at Woussickett Golf Course.
Shelby (329) was second while Ontario (349) was third. All three Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference teams will move on to next week’s district tournament at Port Clinton’s Catawba Island Club. The top three teams and the the top four individuals not on a qualifying team advanced.
Galion has been to the Division II state tournament each of the past four years, but lost a wealth of talent to graduation. The heavy turnover left the door open for other contenders, but coach Bryce Lehman was confident in the next generation of Galion standouts.
“I think some people may have overlooked us a little bit,” Lehman said after the Tigers won the Colt Classic in August. “We’ve got some younger guys but they have been working hard.”
Senior Max Longwell and freshman Nate McMullen led the Tigers with matching 79s. Junior Nick McMullen, Nate’s older brother, carded an 80 while sophomore Logan Keller finished with an 86.
Shelby, which doesn’t have a senior among its top five, was led by sophomore Ty Keinath’s 79. Junior Brody Miller shot an 82 while fellow junior Carson Brubaker had an 83 and sophomore Will Magers had an 85.
Ontario earned the third and final district qualifying spot by a single stroke over Clear Fork (340). The Warriors were led by senior Ryan Chapman, who shot a 79. Sophomore Charlie Danuloff carded an 80, while junior Jordan Reed and sophomore Hunter McCarthy shot matching 95s.
Clear Fork was led by senior Caleb Dettmer, who shot an 86. Seniors Jared Scott and Zane Schultz had 87s, while sophomore Nate Lind had a 90.
Wynford finished 10th with a team total of 374. Sophomore Micah Greene led the Royals with an 84.

Buckeye Central took second at the Division III sectional tournament at Valley View Golf Course in Galion.
The Bucks shot a team total of 351 to earn one of the three qualifying spots to next week’s district tournament. Old Fort (326) won the sectional championship while Tiffin Calvert (356) earned the third and final district qualifying berth.
Buckeye Central was led by senior Kaiden Vaughn, who shot an 85. Fellow seniors Logan Niese and Alex Kanney fired 86s, while senior Casey Geissman had a 94.
