COLUMBUS — Galion has some work to do during Saturday’s final round of the Division II state tournament at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course.

The Tigers shot an opening-round 339 and find themselves in a three-way tie for seventh with Findlay Liberty-Benton and Carrollton at the midway point of the two-day, 36-hole event.

Matthew McMullen led the Tigers on Friday with an 80. Spencer Keller and Max Longwell shot matching 86s while Nick McMullen carded an 87. Bronson Dalenberg shot 93.

The Tigers, who are making their fourth straight state tournament appearance, will look to improve on last year’s sixth-place finish when action resumes Saturday morning.

Defending state champ Gahanna Columbus Academy shot a 300 Friday to open a comfortable 15 stroke advantage over Kettering Alter, last year’s state runner-up.

Columbus Academy’s Stephen Ma has the clubhouse lead after an opening-round 1-under 71. He’s one stroke ahead of teammate Aditya Reddy in the chase for state medalist honors.

In Division II girls action, Shelby’s Nicole Jones shot an opening-round 78 on OSU’s Gray Course and is alone in 11th place.

A junior and three-time state qualifier, Jones is looking to improve on last year’s seventh-place finish. Shaker Heights Laurel’s Jami Morris leads the 72-player field after firing a 2-under 68. She has a two-stroke advantage over Williamsport Westfall’s Maddi Shoults.
