FREDERICKTOWN – Fredericktown head football coach Beau Wolford has resigned after two seasons at the helm, according to a press release from FHS Athletic Director Nate Bellman.

Wolford posted a 2-18 record as Fredericktown’s varsity play-caller over the last two seasons, going 1-9 each year. The Freddies finished last in the KMAC this season and second-to-last in 2018.

Wolford’s resignation became official Thursday morning, Bellman said in the press release.

“I want to thank Coach Wolford for his efforts the past two seasons. Beau has been a class act and we wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors,” Bellman stated.

The search for Fredericktown’s next head coach will begin immediately, Bellman added.

“We have a proud Freddie Football tradition and we will move swiftly and efficiently to find the best fit to serve as our next Varsity Head Football Coach,” Bellman said.

Wolford was not available for comment as of press time Thursday.

Wolford replaced former Fredericktown coach Will Hartley in 2018 after spending four seasons at Cardington (three as an assistant, one as head coach). The Pirates accumulated a 21-19 record over those four years, including two 7-3 seasons that nearly pushed them into the playoffs.

Wolford brought the spread offense to Fredericktown in 2018, after the Freddies had spent years running the Power-I. The coach changed back to the Wing-T system this year, but Fredericktown still struggled to score. The Freddies scored just 10 points per game this season after scoring 11 the year before.

Fredericktown’s two wins under Wolford came against Mount Gilead (0-10) in 2018 and Utica (0-10) this year.

Wolford’s team this year was one of the youngest in the area; of the 29 players on the roster, 14 were freshmen. Injuries set Fredericktown back in 2018, as several key playmakers went down late in the season.

Prior to Wolford’s arrival, Fredericktown went 5-5 in 2017 and made back-to-back playoff appearances in 2014 and 2015. The Freddies went 11-0 in 2014 before falling in the regional semifinals; they went 11-3 in 2015, losing in the regional finals. Fredericktown completed back-to-back undefeated regular seasons in 2009 and 2010, advancing to the regional finals in 2009 and the Div. VI state semifinals in 2010.
