COLUMBUS — Tyler Sabo has some ground to make up, but Ashland’s senior ace is in contention.
Sabo shot a 2-over 73 during Friday’s opening round of the Division I state tournament at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course. The Ohio State recruit is tied with two other players for fifth, four strokes off the lead.
Lakota East’s Joe Wilson shot a 2-under 69 for a three stroke lead over a group of three players at 1-over at the 36-hole event’s midway point. The final round is Saturday.
Ashland is eighth in the team standings after shooting a 323 Friday. Cleveland St. Ignatius leads the team standings with a 293, two stokes ahead of Akron Hoban (295).
Playimh the back nine first, Sabo bogeyed two of his first three holes before settling down. He birdied the par 4 15th and birdied two of his final four holes.
Kamden Mowry backed Sabo with a 79, his best round in three trips to the state tournament. Aidan Chandler also had his best round in state tournament competition with an 83. Wyatt Mohrman carded an 88 and Keslar Bates shot a 101.
Lexington’s Troy Chapman shot an 86 Friday.
In girls action, Ashland’s Klaira Paramore is tied for 31st after shooting a 9-over 79 in the opening round.
Rocky River Magnificant’s Cara Heisterkamp is the clubhouse leader after shooting a 3-under 67 Friday. She has a four-stroke lead over a group of four golfers.
In the girls team race, Mason leads after the opening round with a 298. Dublin Jerome (301) is second and Centerville (302) is third.
