Over the next few months, posts from brands of all kinds - including from local news sites like Richland Source - will appear significantly less often in your Facebook news feed, according to Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

This is a big deal for readers of local news.

Zuckerberg made the major announcement Thursday night, and it will almost certainly affect the way you read news on the biggest social media platform in the world. Facebook hopes this change will increase the quality of the news in your feed and give users more time to connect with the people most important to them.

From our first day, Richland Source embraced Facebook as a channel to connect with readers in a convenient and conversational way. Social media of all kinds is a great way to distribute news to readers, and it will remain so. But things will be different and here’s the bottom line:

If you rely solely on Facebook to deliver local news to you, you are about get a lot less of it.

In the next few days, there will inevitably be a complete national media freakout over this change because, well, hysterical is the what national media does best these days.

Resist the urge to join them.
