William Joseph “Bill” Sheriff

William Joseph “Bill” Sheriff, of Bellville, passed away Saturday, August 2, 2014 in Ohio Health MedCentral Hospital, Mansfield, surrounded by his family. He was 70.

He was born September 4, 1943 to parents Russell & Gladys (Perry) Sheriff in Mansfield. Following Bill’s graduation from Bellville High School with the class of 1961 he joined the Coast Guard and was proud of his service to his country.

On December 28, 1963, he married Mary M. Vaccaro and together raised four children. Favorite pastimes included: fishing, golfing playing the banjo, collecting coins and stamps, and working on model planes. But above all, Bill was a fantastic cook—homemade bread, gourmet popcorn, delicious pizza—his food was the best.

Bill was a member of Resurrection Parish in Lexington and was active with their Stephen’s Ministry group. He was currently serving as President of the Bellville Village Counsel and was a member for 28 years. Bill was also a member of: Knights of Columbus, the American Legion Irvin Hiskey Post # 535 in Bellville, the Clear Fork Valley Chamber of Commerce, Bellville Lion’s Club, and the Jefferson Grange #251.

In addition to his loving wife of 50 years, Mary Sheriff of Bellville, he is survived by his four children (and spouses): Anne (Joel) Brokaw of Butler, Russell (Jennifer) Sheriff of Fredericktown, William M. (Carrie Fisher) Sheriff of Bellville, and Susan Sheriff of Bellville; six grandchildren: Anthony (Emily) Sweeney of Lexington, Nicole (Brian French) Sweeney of Bedford, Jonathan (Brooke) Sweeney of Butler, Christopher “Chip” Sheriff of Fredericktown, Heather (Jorge Delgado) Sheriff of Fredericktown, and Eric Sheriff of Bellville; two great-grandchildren: Jaxon and Jonah Sweeney of Lexington; his mother Gladys Sheriff of Bellville; two siblings: Candace Branham of Bellville and John (Nadine) Sheriff of Frazeysburg; three brothers-in-law: Frank (Helen) Vaccaro, William (Helen) Vaccaro, and Robert Morri; and numerous nieces and nephews and friends.

Bill was preceded in death by his father Russell Sheriff; a brother-in-law Danny Branham; and a sister-in-law Camille Morri.

His family will receive friends 4-7 p.m. Wednesday evening August 6, 2014 in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home, 81 Mill Rd, where a memorial service will be held Thursday morning at 11 a.m. with the Very Reverend Father Beaver officiating. Military honors will be performed outside the funeral home by the American Legion Irvin Hiskey Post # 535 of Bellville. Burial will be held at a later date in Bellville Cemetery.

Contributions in his memory to the Bellville Bandstand or the Jefferson Township Rescue Squad can be made the funeral home (or sent: P.O. Box 3085, Mansfield, Ohio 44904).
