William "Bill" Crawford Sr.

BELLVILLE -- William Oliver “Bill” Crawford Sr., 88, of Bellville went home to be with his Lord and Savior whom he faithfully served for over 60 years, after passing away Sunday July 27, 2014 in Knox Community Hospital following a short illness.

One of ten children, Bill was born June 6, 1926 in Houston, Texas, the son of Elmer and Louella (Shaffer) Crawford. Bill was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps serving during World War II.

Early in his career, he worked for Canteen Vending Service in Youngstown, Ohio earning awards for top salesman and area manager for many years. Later, he left Canteen and purchased his own vending service, building Crawford Vending Service in New Castle, PA to become the largest in the western Pennsylvania area. In 1979, Bill sold Crawford Vending Service. He and his wife Shirley moved to Frederick, Maryland in 1981 and started Crawford Building and Lawn service, which grew to over 50 employees. Bill retired from Crawford Building and Lawn in 1991.

Bill was always positive in nature, not seeing the glass as being half full, but filled to overflowing. He was young in heart and mind and truly lived life to the fullest for 88 years. Of all Bill’s accomplishments, he was the most proud of his family, praying for each one by name nightly.

His hobbies included fishing, coffee time at McDonalds and Thursday morning mens breakfasts.

Bill never knew a stranger, loved telling jokes and bringing laughter to any situation. He attended CitiChurch, and had a passion for missions and those who were less fortunate.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Shirley; daughters Debi Easley of Bellville Ohio, Sandy (Galen) Rippeon of Frederick, MD, and LuAnn (Rick) Robinson of Manchester, MD; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Chris) Stahley, Christopher (Ashley) Rippeon, Joshua (Erika) Robinson, Matthew (Christina) Robinson, and Luke Robinson and his fiancée Ketyllen  all of Maryland. Seven great grandchildren, Dylan Cottrell, Aidan Cottrell, Connor Stahley, Hailey Rippeon, Caleb Rippeon, Colton Stahley and Cody Stahley, all of Maryland; daughter-in-law Paige Crawford; many nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents Bill was preceded in death by his son William Crawford Jr. in 2012, and all nine of his siblings.

The family will receive friends Friday, Aug. 1, 2014 from 2-4 p.m. in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home where funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Bill’s nephew, Rev. Mike Hershner will officiate and military honors will follow at the funeral home and will be performed by the Bellville American Legion Post #535.
