Verl B. Stevenson

Verl B. Stevenson, 96, of Galion, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away on Sunday, July 23, 2017 at Mill Creek Nursing and Rehab, Galion.

Verl was born in Bucyrus, on April 8, 1921 to the late Elmer and Weltha (Baum) Stevenson. He married June E. Evans on April 17, 1949 and she preceded him in death on June 12, 2006. 

Verl proudly served in the Merchant Marines as a radio operator during World War II.

Verl was an Independent Insurance Agent for 39 years, retiring in 1988 from Nationwide Insurance Company. He was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church, Galion, where he taught the adult Sunday school class for many years. Verl was also a member of the VFW Post 79, Galion, Galion Lodge #414 (Free & Accepted Masons) for over 70 years and the Galion Kiwanis Club.

Every year he would sell the most tickets for the Kiwanis pancake breakfast. In 1949, he opened a Dairy Queen in Bucyrus and changed the name to Dairy Crest before he sold the business.

His children and family were very important to him. He enjoyed family gatherings, church activities and his life passion was health and wellness. In his later year’s he enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his special friend Barbara Butler.

He is survived by his children; Vicki and Steve Crim, of Columbus, Valeri and Bruce Rush, of Galion, Dr. Matthew and Teresa Stevenson, of Worthington, grandchildren; Clayton Rush and fiancé Ashley Winand, Collin and Molly Rush, Hilary and Nathan Leinard, Brian Crim, Anna Stevenson, Abigail Stevenson; great-grandchildren; Lexi Rush, Layni Rush, Libbi Rush, Hudson Rush, Charlie Rush, Sophie Rush, Weston Leinard, and Miles Leinard.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa Stevenson, two infant sons, his brother, Robert Stevenson and his sister Iona Failor.

Friends may call on Monday, July 31, 2017 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Schneider-Gompf Funeral Home, 303 Portland Way North, Galion. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, July 31, 2017 at Schneider-Gompf Funeral Home, Galion, with Rev. Matthew Weaver officiating.

Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Galion with full military honors conducted by the U.S. Navy and Galion/Crestline Veterans Military Funeral Detail.

Memorial contributions may be made to Christ United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home.
