Robert W. “Pappy” Snyder, 97, of Galion, died peacefully Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016 at his home.
Bob was born in Bellaire on Sept. 28, 1919 to the late Ira and Bertha (Sherer) Snyder. He married Shirley E. Tuttle on May 31, 1943 and she preceded him in death on May 3, 2016. Bob missed his bride of almost 73 years and with only seven months apart, they are together again.
In 1937, Bob graduated from Nevada High School. He then joined the Air National Guard where he was a Chief Master Sergeant and Technician. Bob retired from the Ohio Air National Guard in 1979 after 29 years of service.
He was a proud World War II veteran. Among Bob’s many military honors, he was a recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory, member of the American Theatre, Small Arms Expert, Award of Merit, and the Air Force Longevity Service Award.
He was a member of the American Legion Scarborough Post #243, Galion, the Air Force Sergeants Association, a lifetime member of the AMVETS Post #1979, Galion, and a member of the Venus Lodge #152 F&AM Masonic Lodge. Throughout his life, Bob was an avid golfer and while golfing with his son, had a hole-in-one at New Winchester Golf Course. He also enjoyed square dancing, bowling, and softball.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Norman and Dr. Alice Snyder, of Groveport; his daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Harold Cain, of Springfield; his six grandchildren, Andy and Jennifer Snyder, Angela and Joseph LaRosa, Aaron Snyder, Noelle Snyder, Anthony and Terri Cain, and Samuel and Courtney Cain; his five great-grandchildren, Adam Ford, Amanda Ford, Alex Ford, Logan Cain, Skylar Cain; numerous nieces and nephews; and his caregivers that have lovingly cared for him after Shirley’s passing, Maxine Murphy, Terina Charles, Dez Lease, and Judy Morgan.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Karl, Donald and Jimmy Snyder; and his sister, Doris Candel.
Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016 at the Mark A. Schneider Funeral Home, 303 Portland Way N., Galion. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, December 19 at the funeral home with Pastor Tim Wingert officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Galion. Military honors will be given by the U.S. Air Force and the Galion/Crestline Veterans Military Funeral Detail.
