Gene Bopp passed away Sunday, February 2, 2014 in his Mansfield home following a sudden illness. He was 70.

Born April 18, 1943 in Conemaugh, PA he was one of Bernerd and Velma (Shaffer) Bopp’s eleven children. After graduating high school he joined the Air Force to serve his country. He moved to the Mansfield area in 1977 and shortly thereafter he and Ellen were married.

He worked more than 18 years for Ward Craft in Fredericktown from where he retired. In free time Gene enjoyed collecting antiques and listening to bluegrass music. A loving grandfather, his favorite pastime was spending time with the grandkids.

Gene was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church in Mansfield where he served as Sunday School Treasurer and often cooked for their free community dinners.

In addition to his wife Ellen (Theaker) Bopp of Lexington, he is survived by daughter Jessica Bopp and her children Jenna and Ella of Lexington; step-daughter Carrie & Rich Hartman and their children Ian and Audrey of Akron; two brothers Richard Bopp of GA and Kenny Bopp of Mentor; two brothers-in-law Doug & Mary Jean Theaker of Mansfield and Carl Theaker of Maumee; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service celebrating Gene’s life will be held 1 p.m. next Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at Main Street United Methodist Church, 230 S. Main St. in Mansfield and Pastor Allen Rose will officiate. A private burial will occur in Lexington Cemetery.
