Joyce Y. Crawford, 75, known to many as “The Cookie Lady,” of Galion, died Saturday, May 30, 2015 at her home. She passed surrounded by her family.
Joyce was born in Crestline, on February 14, 1940 to the late Joseph and Rose (Dewalt) Koysh. She married James F. "Frank" Crawford on August 21, 1966 and he preceded her in death on February 17, 2001.
Joyce attended Gospel Baptist Church, Galion and worked as a custodian for Galion City Schools for many years, taking her retirement in 2003. Her life, however, was centered on her love of baking and her care for the community with whom she shared her life. Joyce loved to bake; she baked as an occupation and as a way to warm the hearts of others. She was known for the wedding cakes she made, and the custom and fancy cakes she would make for special occasions. Joyce supported her school system and her students by baking cookies for the Jr./Sr. Prom at Galion High School for 25 years, baking over 33,000 cookies in total. Each year when she finished baking for the kids, she would bake diabetic cookies for the Senior Prom held the following day for Galion’s Golden Agers. She particularly enjoyed the promenade of the couples arriving by car and being introduced and welcomed into the prom. Her church’s Cookie Walk bake sale was her favorite event.
Joyce always kept a positive and welcoming outlook. She offered a willing hand to help someone who was in need. It was her pleasure to help others and she saw it as an opportunity to interact with people. She greatly enjoyed her fellowship with the Young at Heart Seniors Group at Gospel Baptist Church. She enjoyed her friends at Church and would take trips with her church family.
She is survived by her two sons and her daughter: Daniel E. Crawford, and Peggy Reese, both of Crestline, Eric Crawford and Kent Mittelstaedt, Lakewood, her five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and her brother, William J. and Martha Faye Koysh, Galion. She leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews, and friends too numerous to mention.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Tim A. Crawford.
Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, June 4, 2015 at the Mark A. Schneider Funeral Home, 303 Portland Way N., Galion. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 5 at the funeral home with Pastor Mike Newman officiating. Burial will follow in Crawford County Memory Gardens, Crestline.
