John D. Waddell, 54, of Galion, died peacefully Saturday, January 16, 2016 at Heartland of Marion, after complications from cancer with his loving wife by his side.
John was born in Van Nuys, CA on July 22, 1961 to Hubert (Tom) Leroy and Rovena (Suzi) Ollane (Coriell) Waddell, and she preceded him in death. He married Hillary L. Bates on February 12, 2012 and she survives him.
John spent many successful years in sales, but found his true passion as a corrections officer at Marion Correctional Institution. John enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandsons and had a love of music with a passion for The Beatles. John was always known for his strong work ethic, generosity and sense of humor. If you needed help, John was always willing to lend a hand and he would try to make you smile at the same time. He served in the United States Marine Corps and received the Navy Achievement Medal for superior performance.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children; Eve Pollard, Westerville, Erica Petty, Galion, Sarah (Andy) Burk, Bucyrus, and Shannon (Vincent) Curry, Louisville, KY; his brothers and sisters; Paula (Roy) Roach, Ironton, Bruce (Rikki) Nozik, Las Vegas, NV, Judy (Jorge) Pinos, Granda Hills, CA, Sue (Brent) Pettiford, Gahanna, Tommi Waddell, Gahanna, Gerri (David) Summerville, Gahanna; his eight grandsons, Shannon, Christian, Carson, Jude, Deshawn, Brandon, Reed and Yuan.
He was preceded in death by a brother Mike Waddell.
A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016 at 10 a.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 4456 Morse Road, Gahanna, OH 43230 with Pastor Roy Roach officiating. Military honors will be given by the U.S. Marine Corps following the service.
