John S. Hurson, 90, of Mansfield, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2017 at OhioHealth MedCentral Mansfield Hospital after an extended illness.

Born Aug. 11, 1927 in Plymouth, Ohio he was the son of Carl and Mary (Barsic) Hurson.

John graduated from Crestline High School in 1947 and worked as a crane operator and truck driver for Moyer’s Auto Wrecking for over 40 years prior to his retirement in 1993. He lived most of his life in Crestline before moving to Mansfield.

John loved to sit on the patio taking in Mother Nature as well as visits from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid sports fan of the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Cavaliers and The Ohio State Buckeyes.

He was a navy veteran post World War II serving active duty for one year followed by eight years in the Reserves. He regularly attended Crossroads Community Church in Mansfield.

He is survived by his daughter, Charlene Hurson, of Bucyrus, his step-sons, Mark and Wilma Crawford, of Mt. Gilead, and Gary and Pamela Crawford, of Mansfield with whom he made his home, several nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Betty, after nearly 40 years of marriage, grandson Brandon Crawford, and four sisters, Anna Moyer, Veronica Frank, Francis Taylor and Mary Pandur. 

Friends may call on Wednesday, Aug. 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Schneider-Gompf Funeral Home, 223 West Main St., Crestline.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 24 at 11 a.m. at the Schneider-Gompf Funeral Home, Crestline, with Pastor Ron Biddle officiating. Burial will follow in Crawford County Memory Gardens, Crestline, where full military honors will be given by the U.S. Navy and the Galion/Crestline Veterans Military Funeral Detail.

The family wishes to acknowledge the excellent care provided by Mansfield Memorial Homes, Ohio Health Mansfield Hospital, and Ohio Health Hospice prior to John’s death. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ohio Health Hospice or Crossroad Community Church in care of the funeral home.
