John M. “Buck” Buckman, 85, of Galion, passed away suddenly Sunday, Oct. 19, 2014 at Galion Pointe Nursing Home, Galion.
John was born in Dekoven, KY on Sept. 18, 1929 to the late Floyd M. and Madeline (Stewart) Buckman. He has resided in the area since 1962. He married Barbara A. Brockway on Dec. 17, 1999. They had been together since 1985 and she survives him.
He retired from EDCO Drilling & Producing in 1989 as a supervisor of oil rigs. He had been employed by GCS Air Service until 2006. During this time, John had a small engine repair business servicing lawnmowers and weed-eaters. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater. John was a member of the VFW Post 7651 Ontario, V.F.W. Post 8054 Mt. Gilead, Amvets Post 1979 Galion, and the Outback Saloon. Camping was one of John’s favorite pastimes. You could often see him camping at Mt. Gilead State Park, Mt. Gilead. He got enjoyment from his vegetable garden, reading John Wayne books and the Reader’s Digest, watching Westerns and Chuck Norris in Texas Walker Ranger and cheering for his favorite team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. More than anything in the world, he loved his grandbabies.
In addition to his wife, Barbara, he is survived by children Harold Scott Buckman, Clay, KY, Deborah & Bruce Mills, Henderson, KY, Julie Ann Gully, Kuttawa, KY, Tammy & Randy Grove, Lexington, Lesia Butterfield, Galion, Robert Mahaffey, Galion and Amanda & Ralph Westerfield, Galion, his fifteen grandchildren Zachary Scott, Mills, Spencer Drake Mills, Deborah Elizabeth Mills, Mendy Lee Gully, Mary Ann Buckman, Sara Lynn Buckman, Christie Grove, Mitchell Grove, Christina Dawson, Jeanne Smith, Chelsie Steele, Dameon Steele, Trayvon Westerfield, Sandy Mahaffey and Bobby Mahaffey, his thirteen great-grandchildren, his brother William G. and Joyce Buckman, Bowling Green, KY, and his sister Jacqulin & Darrel Nessler, Tara, IA.
He was preceded in death by his three sisters Mary Snell, Anna Mae Buckman and Margaret F. Buckman, and his brother James M. Buckman.
