John L. Hastings

John L. Hastings, age 75, resident of Shelby died Monday, Nov. 27, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born April 29,1942 in Willard to Arthur W. and Irene F. (Ratliff) Hastings, Sr., he had been a Shelby resident the majority of his life. He was a 1960 graduate of Willard High School and received his Associates Degree from Columbus Business School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

John was formerly employed with R.R. Donnelley’s in Willard. He then started his insurance career with Allstate Insurance Co. and worked within areas of the insurance industry throughout his life at many companies such as Goodyear Tire and Rubber in Akron, Tappan, Gates McDonald and Gallagher Bassett. He was most recently an owner of his own financial sales and consulting business.

He was a member of the American Legion and Golden Rule F. & A. M. Masonic Lodge in Willard and Ruth Chapter #17 O.E.S. in Mansfield.

For many years he enjoyed bowling, trap shooting, hunting and golfing.

John was a very dedicated and proud grandfather of his grandchildren, especially Nick whom he had a special bond with. He enjoyed traveling with Nick and his friends to help and watch Nick’s drag racing events which was something they both loved doing together. He was Nick’s biggest fan.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, JoAnn M. (Dawson) Hastings, his children Melissa L. (Doug) McCandlish, of Westerville, J. Brad (Michelle) Hastings, of Waldo, Stephnie D. (Brian) Kennedy, of Columbus; grandchildren Nicholas Hastings and Amber Mansfield, Olyvia, Ava and Ella Kennedy and Amanda Hastings; four step-grandchildren, Zach McCandlish (Betsy Bobo), Kristin (Joe) Greene, Jim and Jacob Webb; two great grandchildren, Nadia and Landon Mansfield; mother-in-law Donna (Echelbarger) Dawson, of Shelby; brother-in-laws Lynn (Elaine) Dawson and Orva Jr. (DeeDee) Dawson and John Kruse; sister-in-law Linda Hastings and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Carolyn Kruse, brothers Arthur Hastings, Jr. and Richard Hastings; father-in-law Orva Dawson Sr., brother-in-law and sister-in-law Earl and Peggy Dawson.

Friends may call at the Barkdull Funeral Home and Crematory Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home 11 a.m. Friday with Lay minister Linda Cline officiating. A private family burial in Greenlawn Cemetery, Plymouth will be held at a later date.
