John Howard Schiska, 73, of Bucyrus, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, May 23, 2021. He was born December 22, 1947, in Mansfield, Ohio, to the late Harold and Erma (Summers) Schiska.

He led an exciting life filled with many adventures over the years. John was a veteran of the US Air Force serving with the Air National Guard in Ohio and California. He worked at DynCorp in Virginia as a field tech and tech writer and contractor for the US State Department. He worked for the Mansfield Police Department for 7 years in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He had worked at Kroger, handing our food samples and was affectionately known as "Grandpa John" to customers. Always one to keep busy, John was a driver for the VA hospital, transporting veterans to both Cleveland and Columbus.

John enjoyed the outdoors and fishing on his boat on Chesapeake Bay as one of his favorite ways to relax. He enjoyed a lively game of darts and pool whenever he could. He enjoyed music and played the piano and guitar with ease. An avid supporter of Ohio sports teams, John closely followed the Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Browns, and enjoyed NASCAR racing. Cruising on his motorcycle brought him great joy.

He is survived by a son, Mike (Kortney) Schiska of Brookfield, OH; a daughter, Joni (Mike) Sappington of Charlotte, NC; six grandchildren, Gabrielle and Devin Schiska, Alex Kelley, Nathan, Josh, and Ashlyn Sappington; a sister, Carolynn (Ron) Coffey of Mansfield; two nieces and one nephew, Ruth Ann Weiland, Cheryl (Dave) Oswalt and Steven (Jen) Coffey; and special friend, Vicki Givens.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, June 5, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in Mansfield Cemetery. The Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors is honored to serve the family.
