John F. Ermi, 80, of Crestline, died peacefully with his wife by his side Sunday, May 15, 2016 at his residence after a long illness.

John was born in Aliquippa, PA on August 7, 1935 to the late Lawrence J. and Louise E. (Gear) Ermi. He married Patricia A. Melton on November 4, 1972 and she survives him.

John was a devout member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Crestline and a faithful viewer of EWTN television. John loved to garden and it reflected in his beautiful crops that he shared with most everyone he knew. He loved to mow the yard. His wife, Pat, was the most important thing in his life.

John was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during the Korean and Vietnam Wars from September 23, 1952 retiring on September 18, 1978. He was then employed as security by Copperweld, Shelby and retired in 2000. John was a lifetime member of VFW Post 2920, Crestline and the Amvets Post 26, Mansfield. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Msg. Leo W. Frye Council #2642, Crestline and a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Pope John XXIII Assembly, Bucyrus.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two step-sons; Wayne and Cathy Maples, Tampa, FL, Anthony and Jenni Maples, Hermitage, TN, five grandchildren; Stephen and Kelsey Maples, Nicholas Maples, Melisa and Kevin Slaughterer, Kari Maples, Evan and Kasey Maples, three great-grandchildren; Lilian Slaughterer, Henry Slaughterer, Zoey Maples, a special great-nephew, Jordan Johnson, his sister Helen Miller, Crestline, and his brother Armando and Kay Ermi, Pahrump, NV.

He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Eric D. Ermi, and his sister Mary Dā€™Arcangelis.

Friends may call 8:30-10:15 a.m. on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at the Mark A. Schneider Funeral Home, 223 West Main St., Crestline. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Crestline, with Rev. Chris Bohnsack, Celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Crestline. Full military honors will be given at the graveside by the U.S. Navy and the Galion-Crestline Veterans Military Funeral Detail.
