Howard Lee Hocker, 87, of Mansfield and formerly of Galion, Ohio passed away on January 2, 2021 at Avita Hospital in Ontario.
Howard was born on June 3, 1933 to Oscar and Laura (Eichhorn) Hocker in Galion. He graduated from Galion High School in 1951 and from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio with a bachelor of science in business administration in 1955. At Miami, he met his wife of 65 years, Paula J. Campbell. They were married in Port Washington, NY on December 23, 1955. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957 with the 7th Infantry Division, and was stationed in Korea.
After his discharge from the Army, Howard and Paula returned to Galion to raise their sons. He was employed at General Motors Corp in Mansfield in the engineering department for 34 years, retiring in 1991. He was a member of St Paul’s United Methodist Church, Galion and a former member of First United Church of Christ, Galion. He was a Life Member of the Galion Elks where he served as Exalted Ruler and Secretary for 10 years. He was a member of the Galion Masonic Lodge 441, Scottish Rite of Columbus, OH and Aladdin Temple in Columbus, OH. Over the years he was active in the Galion Lions Club, Mansfield and Galion Junior Achievement, Galion Red Cross, his retirement communities, and his church.
Howard was a loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle. He enjoyed spending time at his cottage on Catawba Island and his winter home in Nokomis, Florida. A talented artist, he left many metal sculptures and video presentations for his family to enjoy. He enjoyed gardening, playing tennis, and spending time with friends and family. He lived a full life with a great sense of humor and was always up for a new adventure.
In addition to his wife Paula, he is survived by his children, Jeffrey and Kimberly Hocker of Wilmington, OH, Bradley and Stacey Hocker of Galion, OH, grandchildren Bryan Hocker, Maxwell Chapman, Ethan Howard Hocker and Elena Hocker, a niece and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Suzanne Schiller, a brother, John Hocker, and a sister in law, Judith Campbell.
A private funeral service for the family will be held at Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church with the Rev Ash Welsh officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Galion with military honors provided by the United States Navy and Galion/Crestline Veterans Military Funeral Detail.
