A silent servant, Henry Gassaway was not one to gloat or demand the attention of others. Offering help to those in need, Henry’s generous spirit was shared with many. His hard working hands now at rest, Henry Miller Gassaway passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2014, in Ohio Health MedCentral Hospital due to complications from leukemia.
Henry was born Oct. 27, 1936, in Maryland, and as a young man moved to Ohio. Henry knew the value of hard work, and following his service in the Marine Corps began working in the masonry business. Soon Henry formed his own masonry company, Gassaway Masonry. The phrase, “If you want it done right, call Gassaway”, was spoken many times throughout the Mansfield area. Fair to both employees and customers, Henry’s humble, hardworking nature reinforced quality services.
Henry loved to bass fish. Locally he fished at Pleasant Hill and Apple Valley, and while in Florida he fished in Okeechobe Lake. He enjoyed gardening, making sure his rows were plum and weeded. As in life, Henry worked hard at tending to his garden.
A mentor to family, friends and employees, Henry was a straight shooter offering sound, trustworthy advice.
He was a member of Apostolic Faith Assembly. A man who loved good weather, family, friends, and watching his grandkids grow,Henry was content being a family man who helped others.
He is survived by his daughter Karen (Tim) Schill of Mansfield and son Norman (Candi) Gassaway of Medina; grandchildren Anna, Jonathan, Richie, Logan, Ian, Thomas, Noah, and Jonah; wife Evelyn Gassaway; brother Jacob (Doris) Gassaway of Frederick, Maryland, and a large circle of close friends.
The family will receive friends Friday, July 18, 2014 from 2-4 p.m. to 6-8 p.m. in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where funeral services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Pastor Robert O’Brien will officiate. Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery where military honors will be performed by the Bellville American Legion Post #535.
