Harry E. Nixon, age 82, resident of Shelby died Saturday, March 1, 2014 in MedCentral/Mansfield Hospital.

Born September 27, 1931 in Coshocton to Clifton and Nell (Fidler) Nixon he had been a Shelby resident since 1960. He was formerly employed with Hostetler’s Catering, AMF Co. and Quanex, from which he retired. He then took employment with Shelby City Schools as a bus driver retiring in 1999.

He was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Harry loved spending time with his grandchildren, traveling, karaoke and playing euchre. He was also a big fan of country music and in his younger years sang along with his sister on local radio programs.

Survivors include two sons, Gene (Della) Nixon of Rocklin, CA, and Larry (Linda) Nixon of Mansfield; one stepson, Ken (Mable) Brown of Shelby; one stepdaughter, Janet Schlayer of Shelby; ; grandchildren, Christina Brown, Kenneth Charles Schlayer Jr., Mary Ruth Schlayer, Jennifer Nixon, Sarah Nixon; Heather Pohlabel, Rex Higgins, Melanie Miller, Phillip Nixon and Aaron Nixon; numerous great grandchildren; one sister Mary Jean Bland of Crestline; nieces, nephews and special friends Pat Meyer and family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Nixon in 2010, his son, Thomas Nixon in 2006, five brothers Jack, Tom, Fred, Ken and Don Nixon, stepson-in-law, Kenneth C. Schlayer, Sr. in 2009 and one daughter-in-law, Vicki Nixon.

Funeral services will be held 11:30 AM Wednesday March 5, 2014 at the Barkdull Funeral Home in Shelby. Reverend Edna Stahl, his pastor, will officiate with interment in Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 10:00 to 11:30 AM. Memorial expressions may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church.
