Harold N. Phalor

The real way to gain happiness is to give it to others – Lord Baden-Powell. Those inspirational words in the foundational works of Boy Scouting became a thesis for Harold Phalor’s life. Though life was not always kind to Harold, he was quick to sow the seed of kindness – hopeful optimism, an encouraging word, his loving smile – in hopes a harvest of happiness would result.

Harold passed into the Lord’s care Monday morning April 3, 2017 from his home in Wedgewood Estates. He was 82.

Born in Huntsburg, Ohio on July 24, 1934 to Harold E. and Hazel (Massie) Phalor, he was graduated from Perrysville High School in 1952 where he played basketball and football.

A Boy Scout from age 12, he continued work with the Boy Scouts of America as an adult in the role of Scout Master and working with the Johnny Appleseed Area Boy Scout Council. He received both the St. George Medal and the Silver Beaver Award from BSA for his service to youth.

Harold retired from Empire Detroit Steel in 1987 with 31 years of service, first as assistant purchasing agent and later as superintendant of stores. He was a member of the Directions Credit Union (Empire Affiliates Credit Union) Board of Directors for 38 years.

An avid golfer, he volunteered for 27 years as a Marshall at the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village.

Harold was an active member of St. Peter’s Parish, the Knights of Columbus and the Mansfield Liederkranz.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, M. Joan (Kober) Phalor; daughter, Cynthia (John) McCue; son, Michael (Sherrie) Phalor and daughter-in-law, Karen Phalor; nine grandchildren: Ann (Jeremy) Bise, Jennifer McCue, Lisa (Kevin) Ives, Kristen (Robert) Bills, Amanda (Daniel) VanHarlingen, Stephanie (Brian) Chattin, Katherine Phalor, Nicholas Phalor, Jacob Phalor; nine great grandchildren; and a brother-in-law Said Saleh.

He was preceded in death by his sons Norman E. Phalor, Matthew W. Phalor and Stephan M. Phalor; a grandson Bradley McCue; a sister Alice Saleh and a brother William Massie.

The Phalor family will receive friends Wednesday, April 5, 2017 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Peter’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Jeremy Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the B.R.A.D. Foundation, or the Monsignor Dunn Foundation, and may be made at the funeral home.

Snyder Funeral Home is honored to serve the Phalor family, send them a message of sympathy and support – and watch Harold’s tribute video – online at SnyderFuneralHomes.com.
